올해 노벨 물리학상 수상자 제프리 힌턴 교수(2024년 10월 현재 76세)

1986년 인공지능의 1차 겨울을 끝낸 논문(오차 역전파법)의 공동저자(coauthor)였다.

그 뒤 90년쯤 찾아온 인공지능의 2차 겨울을 십수 년가량 존버했다.
이 2차 겨울은 "신경망"이라는 말만 들어가도 논문이 게재 안 된다고 할 정도의 심각한 겨울이었다.

이 사람은 계속 이 분야를 들이 파서
2006년 2차 겨울을 박살낼 모형을 만들었다.

2012년 2차 겨울을 실질적으로 박살낸 이미지넷 챌린지 우승을 지휘했다.

당시 이미지넷 챌린지에 등장한 "알렉스넷"의 성능은 당시 기준으로는 신세계의 기술이라고 해도 될 정도로 탁월하였다.

그야말로 "존버는 승리한다"의 표본 같은 사람이다.

Professor Geoffrey Hinton, the recipient of this year's Nobel Prize in Physics (as of October 2024, aged 76), was the coauthor of a paper (on backpropagation) that ended the first AI winter in 1986.

After that, he endured the second AI winter, which occurred around 1990, for more than a decade. This second winter was so severe that just having the term "neural networks" in a paper would prevent it from being published.

Despite the challenges, he persisted in this field and, in 2006, developed a model that would break the second AI winter.

In 2012, he led the team that won the ImageNet Challenge, effectively putting an end to the second AI winter.

The performance of "AlexNet," which debuted in the ImageNet Challenge at the time, was so outstanding that it could be considered a revolutionary technology by the standards of the day.

He is truly a prime example of the saying "endurance leads to victory."
